About the Quilt Capital Initiative

Quilters’ Paradise and the Lumberyard Arts Center have partnered to celebrate Baldwin City as the Quilt Capital of Kansas — preserving, sharing, and teaching textile arts across generations.
 
Established in 2021, this partnership connects makers and learners, building community through creativity. Together, creating a future that honors tradition, grows tourism and heritage arts.

2025 Exhibit: Featuring quilts, crochet, needlepoint, and more, this exhibit highlights the vibrant creativity and evolving traditions of textile art in the Quilt Capital of Kansas.

Theresa Shetler

2025 Exhibit: Companions is a tactile collection of felt and mixed media celebrating our relationships with nature, tradition, and memory.

Sankofa: Lessons Learned

Marla Arna Jackson

2022 Exhibit: Internationally known Story Quilt artist Marla Jackson shared portrait quilts inspired by oral histories, historical figures, and Kansas heritage. Her work has been shown at over 35 venues, including the Smithsonian.
